How To Clean and Oil Your Glock
Posted by
onGlocks have a reputation for reliability and durability, which is ensured by taking care of your Glock by cleaning and oiling it as needed. Even though it is true that a Glock already has a more manageable maintenance schedule when compared to other firearms, you still need to take care of it. Learn more about how to clean, oil, and care for your Glock below.
The Maintenance Schedule of a Glock
Unlike many other weapons on the market today, there is no need for you to over-clean your Glock. New Glocks come with copper-colored lubricant on portions of the interior of the slide. In general, after you have taken two or three trips to the gun range (or have fired about 400 rounds), it is time for you to clean your Glock. If you don’t use your Glock often, you should still try to clean it every three months. Over time, oils, moisture, dust, and lint are going to infiltrate your Glock. Therefore, you need to maintain it regularly.
The Process of Cleaning and Oiling Your Glock
When it comes time to clean and oil your Glock, you should always refer to the owner’s manual and clean your Glock properly. On the other hand, many of the steps are going to be similar. Using a mat from Ghost inc will help you to keep all of your Glocks parts in front of you and contained.
The steps to follow in cleaning your Glock include:
- Start making sure your Glock is unloaded before you start to clean it. This is critical not only for your safety but for the safety of others as well.
- Point the Glock away from any objects or people. Then, dry fire the pistol a single time, ensuring there isn’t a bullet in the chamber.
- After you ensure the Glock is unloaded, break it down into its component parts. The Glocks components should include the slide, barrel, guide rod, and frame. You should not need to disassemble Glock any further to clean it sufficiently.
- Next, clean the firearm barrel with a quality gun cleaner and solvent. Many people use a toothbrush. If the barrel is extremely dirty, they consider using a dry bore brush to clean the inside. Wipe the exterior of the barrel down with a soft rag or patch.
- After cleaning the Glock barrel, clean the firearm slide. Swab the slide rail cuts as well as the inside of the slide with a cotton Q-tip. Use a clean, dry patch to wipe down the interior.
- Use the wide end of a nylon cleaning toothbrush. Brush any carbon deposits off of the receiver. Use the wide end of a toothbrush to brush to remove any burnt gunpowder or debris present on the interior.
- After this, inspect the main components of the pistol and ensure they look clean.
- Finally, lubricate the pistol sufficiently. You should lubricate the slide, the barrel, and the frame and receiver. In general, you should only need about six drops of oil to complete a lubrication process.
Conduct a function check after you lubricate the Glock to ensure that it works properly.
These are the steps you need to follow to ensure that your Glock is cleaned and oiled properly. Stick to a regular maintenance schedule that allows you to get the most out of your Glock.
Tips for Safe Glock Storage
Of course, when you are not using your Glock, you also need to make sure you store it safely. Some of the tips that you should keep in mind include:
- Ensure that your Glock is stored in a safe, secure area with a lock on it, particularly if children are around.
- Ideally, place your Glock in a cushioned container that will protect it.
- Try to store the ammunition separately from the gun to prevent any misfire.
- Following these tips can help you make sure that your Glock is secure when you store it.
