Can You Customize a Glock in California?
Posted by
onIf you own a pistol in California, you understand that there are a lot of regulations that you need to follow. You might even be thinking about modifying your Glock pistol. Meanwhile, you should ensure that you abide by all California gun laws. Even though you can certainly still customize your Glock to meet your needs, mainly if you use the right accessories, there are a few critical points to keep in mind.
The Roster of Certified Handguns
The first thing you need to do is check the California Roster of Certified Handguns. To purchase a pistol in California, even if you are purchasing a gun from an out-of-state dealer, the handgun must be on this list. The gun has to go through an extensive testing process to ensure it is safe for people to use. A few of the points to note include:
- Multiple handguns of the same make and model are sent to the lab for independent testing to make sure the manufacturing process is reliable.
- The lab will fire hundreds of rounds to ensure the pistol functions exactly as it should.
- The handgun will be examined closely after the testing process to ensure it has not broken down.
- The handgun will also be dropped to the floor repeatedly to ensure it does not accidentally discharge.
The testing process is incredibly involved, and there are some immediate criteria that will exclude the handgun from inclusion on this list.
Some of the issues that could disqualify the handgun from being included are:
- The handgun cannot have a capacity of over ten rounds.
- A rimfire pistol must have a magazine disconnect system if the magazine can be removed.
- The handgun also has to have a magazine disconnect system or an indicator signifying the chamber is loaded if it is center-fired.
- Any pistol that does not pass the testing above will also be disqualified.
After going through the details of the criteria your handgun must meet to be purchased in California, what does this mean for modifying your Glock pistol?
Lots of Glock Pistols Are On the List of Safe Handguns
There are numerous Glock pistols and handguns added to the list of certified-safe handguns in California. A few examples include the Glock 29, the Glock 27, the Glock 26, the Glock 19, the Glock 23, the Glock 22, the Glock 17, and several others. One handgun not on this list is the Glock 18, as it is reserved for law enforcement and military use only.
You can purchase these handguns relatively easily in California, and then you are allowed to modify them. It is important for you to make sure that your modifications will not violate any of the criteria listed above. You need to make sure you do not modify the Glock to add a magazine that carries more than ten rounds. If you do, you could violate one of the criteria above and face fines and sanctions.
You do not necessarily need to have your pistol tested again after you modify it, but you do not want to run the risk of getting in trouble with law enforcement.
Do Not Turn Your Glock Into an Assault Weapon
Finally, you should not modify your pistol to turn it into an assault weapon. Civilians are not allowed to own an assault weapon in California, and while it would be very hard for you to modify your Glock and make it an assault weapon, this is not something you should do. For example, adding a threaded barrel capable of accepting a flash suppressor would constitute an assault weapon, and it would be illegal.
