There is an expensive registration fee that manufacturers have to pay before the gun can be added to this list. The gun stays on the list for one year. In order for the gun to remain on this list, the fee has to be paid again. What exactly does the testing entail?

The Testing Process

Every handgun that is sold in California has to be tested thoroughly. That way, the state can verify that it is safe for users. Several steps have to be followed in the testing process, including:

• Multiple handguns from the same make and model have to be submitted to an independent testing laboratory.
• The laboratory itself has to fire 600 rounds of ammunition from each gun. That way, the laboratory can confirm that the gun can fire reliably.
• After the test has finished, the handgun has to be verified to be free from any cracks or breakages. These cracks could increase the risk of injury to the user.
• After the gun has been fired, the handgun has to be dropped on the floor repeatedly. The laboratory is making sure the handgun will not fire accidentally if dropped.
• The laboratory will also check the powder and the primer to ensure the handgun did not experience any issues.

Once the gun passes through all of these tests, it may be deemed safe for users. At that point, it can be added to the roster.

Some Guns Are Deemed Unsafe

There are several reasons why a handgun may be deemed unsafe in California. A few examples of issues that could qualify as being unsafe include:

• The handgun cannot have a capacity of over ten rounds
• Any handgun that is center-fired and made after 2006 must contain a loaded chamber indicator or a magazine disconnect system
• Any handgun that is rimfire has to have a magazine disconnect system if it can be detached
• If the handgun malfunctions, fires when dropped, or experiences any cracks during testing, it can be deemed unsafe

These are just a few of the reasons why a handgun may not be added to the list. Of course, any automatic handgun cannot be added to the list, as these are illegal for civilians to own.

There are plenty of newer models that have been added to the list as well. Notice that the Glock 18 is not on this list. This handgun is only for military and law enforcement use.
