Glockzilla. The Glock 40 - One of the Original 10 mm Handguns
Posted by
onThere are not many manufacturers of the 10 mm round. Glock is one of them, and the company makes the Glock 40 specifically for the 10 mm round. This particular piece will cover the Glock 40, affectionately known by many as Glockzilla, but before that, it is a good idea to take a few minutes and discuss the round itself.
Glock 40 and The 10 mm Round
The 10 mm round is not found in most places, but the round has its adherents. The original Glock 20 was a 10 mm model dating back to 1991.
The round starts in 1983 with a retired World War II-era Marine veteran and firearms expert, Lieutenant Colonel John Dean “Jeff” Cooper. It was Lt. Col. Cooper’s goal to create a round with better ballistics than the .45 ACP.
The round entered with a bang but quickly faded. The primary issue was with the magazines and the small number of manufacturers with a firearm for the round. Later into the 1990s, the 10 mm, trimmed down slightly into the .40 S&W round, became the round for the FBI and many law enforcement agencies.
The size of the round, recoil, and the grip made the 10 mm a bit much for smaller hands and shooters. Law enforcement was lukewarm about the round, but the general public took to the 10 mm quickly.
Glock 10mm
Glock was fast to pick up the new 10 mm round. The Glock 20 and Glock 29 were the first, and the 40, the topic of this piece, came along in 2015. The Gen 4, standard for new Glocks rolling out of the factory, has a few great features:
- 360 Grip texture
- Reversible magazine catch
- Multiple Backstrap System
The backstrap system needs some discussion. Glock’s backstraps can only be added to the original grip. The proprietary backstraps add barely over 0.15 inches with the largest set.
The other major feature of the Gen 4 is a dual recoil spring assembly. The thought is this extends the life of the handgun and cuts back on the recoil. The 10 mm has a strong recoil, and any reduction in recoil is appreciated for some shooters.
Glock 40 Features
The Glock 40 looks like every other Glock. The standard polymer frame and near-perfect rectangular slide. The barrel is an impressive six inches with a slide to match. It is light, but the Glock 40 is designed to shoot and shoot well. Do not let the lightweight bother you. The spring assembly more than cuts the recoil.
The Glock 40 looks almost exactly like the original Glock 17 because of its size. However, it is a bit more stout – necessary for the pressures of the round.
Here is something you should know about the Glock 40. It is a standard Glock. Black, basic, and lacking any fancy bells and whistles – just the way Glock likes their handguns to be. Glocks are not designed to be flashy. Glocks are designed to work and work well.
