What Are The Parts Of An AR-15?
Posted by
onIf you are looking for a reliable weapon that will work well for you and sports shooting purposes, home defense purposes, and hunting purposes, then you may have thought about the AR-15. The AR-15 is popular because it is incredibly customizable; however, what are some of the parts you need to know if you would like to modify your rifle? There are several key parts that you should know.
The AR-15 Upper Receiver
The first category that you need to break down at the upper receiver. This includes the barrel, the bolt carrier, and the charging handle. The upper receiver is going to attach to the lower receiver, allowing your rifle to function properly. You can customize a wide variety of parts from your upper receiver, including:
- The AR-15 Barrel: The barrel of your rifle carries the bullet from the back of the cartridge to the front, propelling it forward. This is one of the most important parts of your rifle because it controls your accuracy and range. There are numerous lengths and widths of barrels that you can customize to meet your needs. In general, your barrel should be at least 16 inches long.
- The Gas Block: Also referred to as the gas tube, your rifle relies on gas pressure to operate correctly. When you pull the trigger, gas pressure will force the bolt carrier forward, facilitating the ejection of the round.
- The Bolt Carrier Group: The bolt carrier includes the bolt, the firing pin, the extractor, and the gas key. The bolt carrier group is responsible for ensuring that your bullet is loaded, fired, and ejected properly.
- The Handguard: As the name suggests, the handguard is responsible for protecting your hand when using your AR-15. As you fire your rifle, it will get hot quickly. The handguard will protect your hand against the heat, preventing you from getting burned.
These are a few of the most important parts of the upper receiver of your AR-15.
The Lower Receiver Parts of an AR-15
If there is an upper receiver, then it only makes sense that there should be a lower receiver as well. The lower receiver connect to the upper receiver, providing you with a functional rifle. This includes your magazine, your buffer tube, your trigger group, and several other parts. A few of the most important parts of the lower receiver include:
- The AR-15 Trigger Housing: The trigger housing includes the trigger, the hammer, and all necessary housing components. If you find that your rifle is not firing properly, you may want to alter the trigger pull weight, making it harder or easier.
- The Buffer Tube: When you pull the trigger, the rifle is going to recoil backward. This kick can be painful. You can change the buffer to reduce your AR-15’s recoil, making it more comfortable to fire. The buffer tube includes the buffer spring and the buffer itself. Both can be customized on an AR-15.
- The AR-15 Magazine: The magazine of your rifle is responsible for holding the bullet. As you pull the trigger, bullets will leave the magazine and enter the rifle where they will be fired. You must know the laws regarding magazines from state-to-state. Make sure your magazine is not too large, or you could end up in trouble.
All of these parts come together to create a functional lower receiver group for your AR-15.
The AR-15 Grip
Finally, to ensure the best shooting experience with an AR-15, it is also important for you to think about the grip. The group is important because it prevents the rifle from slipping in your hand. There are numerous grip textures and styles. For example, if you find that the rifle keeps slipping in your hand, you may want to get with a textured grip, which will make it easier for you to hang on to the rifle. In addition, you may want to change the width or length of your grip to fit your hand better. You need to make sure that you have an ergonomic grip so that you don’t get tired when you are using an A-15.
